Ilmenite Minerals and Ilmenite Mineral Processing in Nigeria
Ilmenite (FeTiO3) minerals are a crucial source of titanium dioxide (TiO2), widely used in various industries. In Nigeria, ilmenite sand TiO2 deposits offer significant potential for mineral processing and economic growth.
Distribution of Ilmenite in Nigeria
Ilmenite crystal deposits in Nigeria are primarily found in alluvial mine sites. More than 90% of Nigeria’s ilmenite is distributed across regions such as Jos Plateau, Bauchi, Zaria, Kano, and Benue. These ilmenite (FeTiO3) minerals are often associated with heavy sand minerals, making them valuable for industrial applications.
Ilmenite Mineral Processing in Nigeria
The most common equipment used for ilmenite mineral processing in Nigeria is the spiral chute. This equipment allows the slurry of ilmenite sand TiO2 to swirl from top to bottom, generating an inertial centrifugal force that separates minerals based on their density.
Processing Steps
Initial Separation:
Raw ilmenite sand is processed using spiral chutes, which effectively remove most of the silica and lighter minerals.
Concentration:
After spiral chute processing, the ilmenite is collected in a concentrate pond. If the iron content is still high, a magnetic separator is used to remove excess iron, increasing the TiO2 content to above 46%. This concentrated ilmenite can then be sold directly.
