Early this year, we visited clients in Kenya, some engaged in tantalum-niobium mining, others in gold mining. Given the local economic conditions and industrial development, we observed that most mineral processing operations were small-scale.
Following meetings with these clients, we established good communication with a gold mining operator. Due to Africa’s abundant natural resources, the continent boasts a diverse range of minerals with high content, as was the case with this client’s gold ore. The gold content was notably high. Based on his budget for the gold processing plant, we recommended gravity concentration, supplemented with shaking tables.
For rock gold ore, we analyzed the ore type and characteristics. Typically, we employ gravity concentration: crushers for breaking down the ore, and ball mills for grinding it to a fineness of over 100 mesh, ensuring proper liberation of the gold from the rock and soil.
Post-grinding, we use shaking tables, mercury amalgamation, or centrifuges to initially recover the visible gold. Among these, shaking tables offer the highest concentration ratio in gravity separation. With shaking tables, we can capture granular gold for smelting. Mercury amalgamation also yields ideal results for visible gold recovery, though it poses environmental concerns and is subject to government regulations. Centrifuges are highly effective for large visible gold particles (above 0.1mm), but they come with higher costs for purchase and maintenance. The choice depends on the specific circumstances.
Gravity concentration is the simplest method for gold recovery, environmentally friendly and easy to operate, but it has a lower recovery rate, leaving gold in the tailings. Therefore, we generally advise heap leaching of the tailings after gravity separation to extract the remaining gold. This combined processing approach will achieve a higher overall gold recovery rate.
