How to Process Placer Tin Ore in Nigeria by Gravity and Magnetic Method?

Placer tin ore is one of the most common tin resources in Nigeria, especially in Plateau State. Many miners there are looking for a simple and low-cost way to get clean tin concentrate. In this article, Dasen Mining will share a real placer tin ore project in Nigeria and show you how the gravity + magnetic process works step by step.

What Is Placer Tin Ore?

Placer tin ore is tin that you find in river beds, sand layers, or soft soil. It is not like hard rock ore. The tin grains are already free, so you do not need to crush big rocks. The ore looks a lot like river sand. In many Nigeria mines, the tin size is fine and even, which makes the process much easier.

Besides tin, placer ore in Nigeria often carries Ta & Nb (tantalum and niobium) too. These are valuable metals, so miners can earn more from the same site if they pick the right flow.

Why Choose Gravity + Magnetic for Placer Tin Ore?

There are two main reasons why gravity + magnetic is the best choice for this kind of ore:

1. The ore is soft and fine. Since there are no big stocks, you can skip the crusher. This saves a lot of money on machines and power.

2. Tin, Ta, and Nb have different features. Tin is heavy, so gravity can catch it. Ta & Nb have magnetic features, so a magnetic separator can pull them out. Using both methods in one plant helps miners get more products from one ore.

For fine and even tin sand, a spiral chute works better than a jig machine. The spiral chute is simple, cheap, and gives a good recovery rate on fine tin.

Full Process Flow for Placer Tin Ore in Nigeria

Below is the flow design our engineer made for a real placer tin ore site in Plateau State, Nigeria.

Gravity Part

Trommel screen – washes the raw ore and takes out waste like wood, roots, and big stones.
Spiral chute gets a rough tin concentrate from the washed sand.
6S shaking table – cleans the rough concentrate and gives a high grade tin product.

Concentration Part (Ta & Nb Upgrading)

Dryer – dries the concentrate so the magnetic machine can work well.
Magnetic separator – splits tin from Ta & Nb. Tin goes to the non-magnetic side, Ta & Nb go to the magnetic side.

Tailing Part

Spiral classifier – sorts the tailing by size.
Dewatering screen – takes the water out of the tailing.
Water recycle system – saves water and keeps the site clean.

What Are the Good Points of This Flow?

  • Low cost. No crushing step, less power use.
  • Simple to run. Workers do not need deep training.
  • High recovery rate. Spiral chute + shaking table catches most of the tin.
  • Two products in one plant. You get tin and Ta & Nb at the same time.
  • Eco-friendly. Water is reused, so the site stays green.

Things You Should Know Before You Start

Before you build a placer tin ore plant, please think about these points:

  1. What is the tin grade in your raw ore?
  2. How fine is the tin size?
  3. Do you also have Ta & Nb or other heavy metals?
  4. What is your daily capacity plan?
  5. How much water can you get on site?
  6. What is your budget?

If you can send us an ore test report, our engineer can make a flow design that fits your mine the best.
